The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of a young girl who escapes from her abusive father with her maid.  Lily Owens is in search of finding out the truth to how her mother was killed long ago.  Set in 1964 in South Carolina, Lily escapes to the town that may hold her mother’s past.  While Lily’s taken in by three bee-keeping black sisters, she experiences a whole new set of remarkable powers and a secret world of bees and honey.  I would definitely recommend this great novel to those who like history, adventure, and a little romance.  ~ Emily R.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

To Kill a Mockingbird describes the life of one family in a small Alabama town during the Great Depression.  Scout, her brother Jem, and her widowed father Atticus Finch, do fairly well in this hard time, for their father is a lawyer.  However, Atticus agrees to defend a black man in his town’s racist white community.  This brings much trouble from the community to the Finch family.  At a fast moving pace and featuring strong themes like prejudice, inequality, and coexistence of good and evil.  I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, action, and history.  ~ Emily R.

The Boy Who Dared by Susan Campbell Bartoletti

I chose to read this book because I love books based on a true time in history.  It sounded very interesting.  I didn’t know much about the Holocaust.  I thought it would be great to learn.  I liked this book because it taught me how brutal it was in Germany when Adolf Hitler was the chancellor.  I couldn’t stop turning the pages.  It was so in depth.  I think it was a very well written story.  I am glad I chose to read this book.  ~ Claire A.

Eight Grade Bites by Heather Brewer

Vlad is an undercover pale teenager living in a small town called Bathory.  He appears normal from the outside but Vlad is most definitely not normal.  Vlad has a secret that only two humans know.  Vlad is a vampire.  There is no other vampire like him because he is the pravus.  The pravus are half vampire half human and can’t be killed.  Vlad is the only half vampire ever to exist so they knew right away he was the pravus.
